Back from when the game was called Empyrean Challenge, and it was played via the postal service.

That ad is part of the reason I join EC 6 Race 3 WAY back when - and bought my first computer (KeyPro II) to run a spreadsheet in VISICalc to design ships.

Wow, If I remember right VisiCalc was one of the first if not the first spread sheet for a PC. A computer store owner I met in Idaho was selling PC computers based on that software alone.

Yes, Visicalc was the first spreadsheet, premiering on the Apple II i think (which was the dominant home machine at the time.) I once met the guy who wrote it -- the author of the first killer app. He was trying to cook up some new stuff, but things have kind of taken over on the internet these days. Many many smart people writing apps.

I keep thinking somebody is going to crack this PBM/web nut sooner or later, and make a "settlers of catan" breakout game that will take turn-based asynchronous distance gaming to the larger public.
