Printable starmaps (2D and 3D!) - Ramblurr - 03-14-2011

I wasn't particularly happy with the clunky ASCII starmap (see example here) that the vanilla FH game engine produces.

Using an excellent starmapping utility created by David Morgan-Mar in 1993 (!!), that somehow still works, I've been able to produce nice looking PDF starmaps from the Far Horizons game data suitable for printing out. If I rotated them they would even be useful as on-screen references.

If no one objects, I'll be distributing these along with the first turn report in the upcoming Galaxy Alpha game, in addition to the standard ASCII map of course. Don't underestimate the utility of of ASCII just because it is clunky Smile

I don't object, but can you distribute the ASC II maps, as well?

Of course, I should have phrased that better. I won't be replacing any of the original material.

All those maps, ascii, 2d & 3d pdfs are mostly useless :)
The only manageable galaxy view is a table with coordinates and calculated distances, or ultimately... FHUI's tables :)

They might be practically useless, that is they won't be much help in crafting your orders, I agree with that. The only way a graphical map would be practically useful is if it was interactive.

However, I think they are useful from a conceptual and roleplaying perspective. They add flavor and character to the game. Of course if you don't like them, feel free to discard them, as you pointed out they aren't required for play. Smile
